Virtualosos 011: Stemage and RETROGRESSION Vol. 1

What do you get when you play classic video game themes backwards? WAFFLES! Trails & Rivers — July 15, 2017

In a fit of hubris, we fired all our writers! With nobody in the writers’ room, WAFFLES! struggles to come up with decent jokes. Fortunately, we’ve had a great subject to tide us over… talkin’ about the Rivers and Trails festival in Sydenham, with loads of stuff going on there today. So it’s all Rivers and Trails today on WAFFLES!. And absolutely no jokes. Playlist is here. WAFFLES! continues to podcast under a SOCAN 22F tariff.

WAFFLES! Obstacles — July 8, 2017

WAFFLES! is podcast under a SOCAN 22F tariff. It’s the Busking Festival in Kingston this weekend, and we spend some time ruminating on the buskin’ names Wacky Chad and Band-Aid the Clown before really getting into this week’s theme: obstacles! Songs about overcoming them, or songs by people who have overcome them. Matt gets to play a metal/hair-metal set at the top of Hour Two. He’s thrilled. Playlist is here.

WAFFLES!: Canada Day Meltdown — July 1, 2017

It’s Canada Day on WAFFLES! Lots of great music about and by Canada/Canadians, with a short detour to celebrate the 40th anniversary of Donna Summer/Giorgio Moroder’s “I Feel Love” and the birth of modern electronic music (sort of). Highlights include the creation of BASMO the Canadian Clown, Matt being stupid tired, and other general silliness. New music by Whitehorse!! WAFFLES! is podcast under a SOCAN 22F tariff.  Playlist is here.

Virtualosos 007: Buying Time

A bit of a grab bag this week, as an interview fell through, but lots of great music to play and explore! Coming up on a more comprehensive look at the GTA series of soundtracks, some music from GTA 5, then springboarding from that Tangerine Dream material to the woozy, sunny sounds of Hotline Miami. From there to my current gaming favourite, The Flame and the Flood, with Chuck Ragan’s bluegrass-infused music, and over to Tyranny. I’ve just started sinking my teeth into that game. And — at last — a little Wayne Newton, to send us on our merry way, and hopefully send some nazi punks on theirs. Danke Shoen, listeners!
