WAFFLES!: Canada Day Meltdown — July 1, 2017

It’s Canada Day on WAFFLES! Lots of great music about and by Canada/Canadians, with a short detour to celebrate the 40th anniversary of Donna Summer/Giorgio Moroder’s “I Feel Love” and the birth of modern electronic music (sort of). Highlights include the creation of BASMO the Canadian Clown, Matt being stupid tired, and other general silliness. New music by Whitehorse!! WAFFLES! is podcast under a SOCAN 22F tariff.  Playlist is here.

Virtualosos 007: Buying Time

A bit of a grab bag this week, as an interview fell through, but lots of great music to play and explore! Coming up on a more comprehensive look at the GTA series of soundtracks, some music from GTA 5, then springboarding from that Tangerine Dream material to the woozy, sunny sounds of Hotline Miami. From there to my current gaming favourite, The Flame and the Flood, with Chuck Ragan’s bluegrass-infused music, and over to Tyranny. I’ve just started sinking my teeth into that game. And — at last — a little Wayne Newton, to send us on our merry way, and hopefully send some nazi punks on theirs. Danke Shoen, listeners!

WAFFLES! 2017-25: Grab Bag and a lot of Phantasm stuff

WAFFLES! is podcasting under a SOCAN 22F tariff! Soooo… Matt went a little weird with this one: watching Phantasm I-IV in less than a calendar week will do that to you. Anyway, a grab bag catch-up kind of week, with lots of new music and lots of Canadian music. Matt’s favourite track for 2017 (so far) from Oneohtrix Point Never. We’re both surprised by how much we like Ralph. Loads of goodies and chatter, including us taking The National to task on their weak grammar skills. And Phantasm, Phantasm, Phantasm!! Playlist is here.

WAFFLES! 2017-24: Na Na Na & Jay Middaugh interview

A spectacular show, in which we (a) play only music with “na na na / la la la” type chorus lyrics; (b) interview Jay Middaugh, director of Live In Kingston, about life since its premiere and an upcoming screening at Kingston’s Skeleton Parks Arts Festival; (c) fail to give away tickets to a really cool-looking local theatre production, and (d) try to figure out if Neil Young shoots babies. Dead. WAFFLES! is podcast under a SOCAN 22F tariff, and produced at and for CFRC 101.9FM in Kingston, Ontario, Canada. Playlist is here!

Episode 003: Maxime Goulet, Part 2

The second of our double-header with innovative Quebec composer Maxime Goulet. Following last episode’s review of Goulet’s work with Gameloft and some of his compositions for orchestra, we’re moving on to more innovations in composition, Warhammer 40,000 and indie games!

I still think I sound like a bit of a putz. Working on it.

Episode 002: Maxime Goulet, Part 01

What a great first interview. I was pleased and privileged to talk to Maxime Goulet, the Montreal-based composer of a score (forgive me) of video games, as well as a renowned classical composer in his own right.

Our website is NOT “virtualosos.com”, which I stupidly assumed was available when I recorded this. “shep.ca” is a good place to look for the podcast; its actual home is at videogamemusic.shep.ca, but that’s a mouthful.
